Frequently Asked Questions

What is Creative Drama?

The technical definition of Creative Drama is "Dramatic improvisation designed by a leader for the benefit of the participants". There are two ways that Creative Drama can be used: Learning about drama and Learning through drama.

At Acting Up, we will do a little of both. Using Theatre Games and activities, children will learn stage terms such as upstage and downstage, "action", and "curtain". They will also learn through the acting out of stories and scenarios how to become "a character" and most importantly to be comfortable in front of others.

What is "Social Presence"?

Social Presence is the ability to speak up when required. It is the awareness of self confidence that allows you to posture yourself in any situation comfortably. It is documented that Public Speaking is the #1 fear today. Social Presence is the ability to tackle that fear, but it goes even further. It is also the ability to speak up in a group, participate in conversations, say "no" when it is not popular to do so, and to have the tools necessary to succeed in front of peers and through life.

It is never comfortable to give a presentation or speak up in a crowd. Everyone has butterflies. When one obtains Social Presence, their butterflies will learn to fly in formation.

Will my child be performing?

At the end of each summer session, we will have a presentation/demonstration of what they have been working on. Don't come expecting to see a play, but rather a culmination of their games and experiences and some improvisation. Our goal for this session is for them to have fun, relax, and acquire some skills. Although there will be some acting, it will not be scripted material, so you will actually see more of their creation than a written play.
